Avocado Sashimi

This delicious and super simple recipe was first discovered by my mom. She made it for herself and was raving about how fantastic it was, and as soon as I heard what the ingredients were, I was in! Avocado, lemon, a special spice, soy sauce, and wasabi. Winner! This is also a great way for my vegetarian friends to enjoy a sushi alternative.

I usually try to make recipes with ingredients that I usually buy or are easy to find, but this was one exception, as I specifically bought two ingredients (a spice and a fancy soy sauce) just for it. The original recipe came from La Fuji Mama

The Ingredients:

  • Avocado (we used three)
  • Lemon
  • Shichimi Togarashi (I bought it on Amazon)
  • Soy Sauce (I took her advice and bought some fancy soy sauce on Amazon)
  • Wasabi Paste

The Steps:

  1. Slice Avocado
  2. Squeeze lemon juice on top
  3. Sprinkle Shichimi Togarashi on top.
  4. Serve with soy sauce and wasabi.

The Photos:

I slice the avocado while it's still in the peel, including running a knife between the flesh and peel...

And then I flip it upside down onto a plate and pull the peel away.

Generously squeeze lemon juice on top of the avocado.

Sprinkle Shichimi Togarashi spice on top. (This spice contains six ingredients: red chili pepper, orange peel, sesame seeds, Japanese pepper, ginger and seaweed.) I'd never had this before, but it is fantastic! It really gave it a special flavor.

We like to combine our soy sauce and wasabi into one dish, although I've heard that you're actually supposed to keep them separate if you want to be authentic. We're just not that fancy.

Enjoy!

This was just our first avocado. I made two more after this, and I'm sure we could have eaten it all night if we had an unlimited supply!

John was loving it!

Like I said, I bought some fancy soy sauce specifically for this recipe. It was good, but I'm not sure it was really worth the extra cost. I'm not the biggest soy sauce fan in the first place, so maybe that's why. I think the magic of this recipe is the avocado, lemon, and spice. I could have easily lived without the soy sauce and wasabi.

I will definitely be making this again in the future!

  1. I'm so glad you both liked this so much. It's one of my favorite lunches now!
I got my spices at one of our local Asian markets; Nanami Togarashi is another name for the same blend of spices. I also use Bragg Liquid Aminos (no added salt or preservatives) instead of soy sauce.
When I make this at work, I also sprinkle it with True Lemon Crystallized Lemon instead of lemon juice and just add all the ingredients directly into the hole in the avocado half and mix as I spoon it out. No mess and in its own container!

    1. Thanks for the substitution ideas! I might need to see if I can find Bragg Liquid Aminos.
